When you arrive at Bunratty Medieval Castle Banquet, a kilted piper plays a tune of welcome. You ascend the Castle steps crossing over the drawbridge to the ‘Bite of Friendship’ offered by one of the Hostesses. Upon entering the Great Hall resplendent with tapestries and furniture of the 16th Century, savour a goblet of Mead while mingling with the Ladies of the Castle. The Castle’s history is related followed by a medieval Madrigal.

The 35 minute spectacle which follows dinner is a superb selection of Irish medieval and traditional songs and instrumental music. The entire evening lasts two and a half hours.

+ Tuesday June 20th 2017 – Rock of Cashel, Kilkenny & Dublin

This morning we depart the beautiful town of Killarney and travel east towards the Rock of Cashel.

According to local mythology, the Rock originated from the Devil’s Bite mountain, located 30 kilometers north when St. Patrick banished the devil from a cave resulting in the Rock’s landing in Cashel. It is reputed to be the site of the conversion of the King of Munster by St. Patrick in the 5th century. The Rock was the traditional seat of the Kings of Munster for centuries before the Norman invasion and in 1101, the King of Munster, Muirchertach Ua Briain, donated his fortress on the Rock to the Church. The picturesque complex has its own character and is one of the most remarkable medieval architecture in Europe.

Continue to Kilkenny and visit the famous Kilkenny Castle. The Castle was built in 1195 by William Marshal the 1st Earl of Pembroke. The Castle stands dramatically on a strategic height that commands a crossing on the River Nore and dominates the ‘High Town’ of Kilkenny City. Over the eight centuries of its existence, many additions and alterations have been made to the fabric of the building, making Kilkenny Castle today a complex structure of various architectural styles.
